Why do we get sick?

Sickness and diseases, why do we get them? What does the bible say about becoming sick? How can we become healed from our illnesses?

[Exo 15:25-26 ESV] 25 And he cried to YHVH, and YHVH showed him a log, and he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There YHVH made for them a statute and a rule, and there he tested them,

26 saying, "If you will diligently listen to the voice of YHVH your Elohim, and do that which is right in his eyes, and give ear to his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you that I put on the Egyptians, for I am YHVH , your healer."

[Exo 23:25-26 ESV] 25 You shall serve YHVH your Elohim, and he will bless your bread and your water, and I will take sickness away from among you.

26 None shall miscarry or be barren in your land; I will fulfill the number of your days.

[Num 5:1-4 ESV] 1 YHVH spoke to Moses, saying, 2 "Command the people of Israel that they put out of the camp everyone who is leprous or has a discharge and everyone who is unclean through contact with the dead.

3 You shall put out both male and female, putting them outside the camp, that they may not defile their camp, in the midst of which I dwell." 4 And the people of Israel did so, and put them outside the camp; as YHVH said to Moses, so the people of Israel did.

[Num 12:1-14 ESV] 1 Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman whom he had married, for he had married a Cushite woman. 2 And they said, "Has YHVH indeed spoken only through Moses? Has he not spoken through us also?" And YHVH heard it. 3 Now the man Moses was very meek, more than all people who were on the face of the earth. 4 And suddenly YHVH said to Moses and to Aaron and Miriam, "Come out, you three, to the tent of meeting." And the three of them came out. 5 And YHVH came down in a pillar of cloud and stood at the entrance of the tent and called Aaron and Miriam, and they both came forward. 6 And he said, "Hear my words: If there is a prophet among you, I YHVH make myself known to him in a vision; I speak with him in a dream. 7 Not so with my servant Moses. He is faithful in all my house.

8 With him I speak mouth to mouth, clearly, and not in riddles, and he beholds the form of YHVH. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?" 9 And the anger of YHVH was kindled against them, and he departed. 10 When the cloud removed from over the tent, behold, Miriam was leprous, like snow. And Aaron turned toward Miriam, and behold, she was leprous. 11 And Aaron said to Moses, "Oh, my lord, do not punish us because we have done foolishly and have sinned. 12 Let her not be as one dead, whose flesh is half eaten away when he comes out of his mother's womb." 13 And Moses cried to YHVH, "O Elohim, please heal her--please." 14 But YHVH said to Moses, "If her father had but spit in her face, should she not be shamed seven days? Let her be shut outside the camp seven days, and after that she may be brought in again."

[Num 14:35-38 ESV] 35 I, YHVH, have spoken. Surely this will I do to all this wicked congregation who are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall come to a full end, and there they shall die." 36 And the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation grumble against him by bringing up a bad report about the land--

37 the men who brought up a bad report of the land--died by plague before YHVH. 38 Of those men who went to spy out the land, only Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive.

[Deu 7:11-15 ESV] 11 You shall therefore be careful to do the commandment and the statutes and the rules that I command you today. 12 "And because you listen to these rules and keep and do them, YHWH your Elohim will keep with you the covenant and the steadfast love that he swore to your fathers. 13 He will love you, bless you, and multiply you. He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, your grain and your wine and your oil, the

increase of your herds and the young of your flock, in the land that he swore to your fathers to give you. 14 You shall be blessed above all peoples. There shall not be male or female barren among you or among your livestock. 15 And YHWH will take away from you all sickness, and none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which you knew, will he inflict on you, but he will lay them on all who hate you.

[Deu 24:8-9 ESV] 8 "Take care, in a case of leprous disease, to be very careful to do according to all that the Levitical priests shall direct you. As I commanded them, so you shall be careful to do.

9 Remember what YHWH your Elohim did to Miriam on the way as you came out of Egypt.

[Deu 28:61-63 ESV] 61 Every sickness also and every affliction that is not recorded in the book of this law, YHWH will bring upon you, until you are destroyed. 62 Whereas you were as numerous as the stars of heaven, you shall be left few in number, because you did not obey the voice of YHWH your Elohim.

63 And as YHVH took delight in doing you good and multiplying you, so YHVH will take delight in bringing ruin upon you and destroying you. And you shall be plucked off the land that you are entering to take possession of it.

[Jos 23:15-16 ESV] 15 But just as all the good things that YHWH your Elohim promised concerning you have been fulfilled for you, so YHWH will bring upon you all the evil things, until he has destroyed you from off this good land that YHWH your Elohim has given you,

16 if you transgress the covenant of YHWH your Elohim, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them. Then the anger of YHWH will be kindled against you, and you shall perish quickly from off the good land that he has given to you."

[1Ki 8:37-40 ESV] 37 "If there is famine in the land, if there is pestilence or blight or mildew or locust or caterpillar, if their enemy besieges them in the land at their gates, whatever plague, whatever sickness there is, 38 whatever prayer, whatever plea is made by any man or by all your people Israel, each knowing the affliction of his own heart and stretching out his hands toward

this house, 39 then hear in heaven your dwelling place and forgive and act and render to each whose heart you know, according to all his ways (for you, you only, know the hearts of all the children of mankind), 40 that they may fear you all the days that they live in the land that you gave to our fathers.

[1Ki 17:17-24 ESV] 17 After this the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, became ill. And his illness was so severe that there was no breath left in him. 18 And she said to Elijah, "What have you against me, O man of Elohim? You have come to me to bring my sin to remembrance and to cause the death of my son!" 19 And he said to her, "Give me your son." And he took him from her arms and carried him up into the upper chamber where he lodged, and laid him on his own bed. 20 And he cried to YHWH, "O YHWH my Elohim, have you brought calamity even upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by killing her son?"

21 Then he stretched himself upon the child three times and cried to the YHWH "O YHWH my Elohim, let this child's life come into him again."22 And YHWH listened to the voice of Elijah. And the life of the child came into him again, and he revived. 23 And Elijah took the child and brought him down from the upper chamber into the house and delivered him to his mother. And Elijah said, "See, your son lives." 24 And the woman said to Elijah, "Now I know that you are a man of Elohim, and that the word of YHWH in your mouth is truth."

[2Ki 1:1-4 ESV] 1 After the death of Ahab, Moab rebelled against Israel. 2 Now Ahaziah fell through the lattice in his upper chamber in Samaria, and lay sick; so he sent messengers, telling them, "Go, inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I shall recover from this sickness." 3 But the angel of YHWH said to Elijah the Tishbite, "Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of

Samaria, and say to them, 'Is it because there is no Elohim in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? 4 Now therefore thus says YHVH, You shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.'" So Elijah went.

[2Ki 15:1-5 ESV] 1 In the twenty-seventh year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Azariah the son of Amaziah, king of Judah, began to reign. 2 He was sixteen years old when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty-two years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jecoliah of Jerusalem. 3 And he did what was right in the eyes of YHWH, according to all that his father Amaziah had done. 4

Nevertheless, the high places were not taken away. The people still sacrificed and made offerings on the high places. 5 And YHWH touched the king, so that he was a leper to the day of his death, and he lived in a separate house. And Jotham the king's son was over the household, governing the people of the land.

[Isa 33:20-24 ESV] 20 Behold Zion, the city of our appointed feasts! Your eyes will see Jerusalem, an untroubled habitation, an immovable tent, whose stakes will never be plucked up, nor will any of its cords be broken. 21 But there YHWH in majesty will be for us a place of broad rivers and streams, where no galley with oars can go, nor majestic ship can pass. 22 For YHWH is our judge; YHWH is our lawgiver; YHWH is our king; he will save us.

23 Your cords hang loose; they cannot hold the mast firm in its place or keep the sail spread out. Then prey and spoil in abundance will be divided; even the lame will take the prey. 24 And no inhabitant will say, "I am sick"; the people who dwell there will be forgiven their iniquity.

[Isa 38:1-20 ESV] 1 In those days Hezekiah became sick and was at the point of death. And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came to him, and said to him, "Thus says YHVH: Set your house in order, for you shall die, you shall not recover." 2 Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to YHWH, 3 and said, "Please, YHWH, remember how I have walked before you in faithfulness and with a whole heart, and have done what is good in your sight." And Hezekiah wept bitterly. 4 Then the word of YHWH came to Isaiah: 5 "Go and say to Hezekiah, Thus says YHWH, the Elohim of David your father: I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Behold, I will add fifteen years to your life. 6 I will deliver you and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria, and will defend this city. 7 "This shall be the sign to you from YHWH, that YHVH will do this thing that he has promised: 8 Behold, I will make the shadow cast by the declining sun on the dial of Ahaz turn back ten steps." So the sun turned back on the dial the ten steps by which it had declined. 9 A writing of Hezekiah king of Judah, after he had been sick and had recovered from his sickness: 10 I said, In the middle of my days I must depart; I am consigned to the gates of Sheol for the rest of my years. 11 I said, I shall not see YHWH, YHWH in the land of the living; I shall look on

man no more among the inhabitants of the world. 12 My dwelling is plucked up and removed from me like a shepherd's tent; like a weaver I have rolled up my life; he cuts me off from the loom; from day to night you bring me to an end; 13 I calmed myself until morning; like a lion he breaks all my bones; from day to night you bring me to an end. 14 Like a swallow or a crane I chirp; I moan like a dove. My eyes are weary with looking upward. YHWH, I am oppressed; be my pledge of safety! 15 What shall I say? For he has spoken to me, and he himself has done it. I walk slowly all my years because of the bitterness of my soul. 16 O YHVH, by these things men live, and in all these is the life of my spirit. Oh restore me to health and make me live! 17 Behold, it was for my welfare that I had great bitterness; but in love you have delivered my life from the pit of destruction, for you have cast all my sins behind your back. 18 For Sheol does not thank you; death does not praise you; those who go down to the pit do not hope for your faithfulness. 19 The living, the living, he thanks you, as I do this day; the father makes known to the children your faithfulness. 20 YHVH will save me, and we will play my music on stringed instruments all the days of our lives, at the house of YHWH.

[Psa 91:1-16 ESV] 1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say to YHWH, "My refuge and my fortress, my Elohim, in whom I trust." 3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. 4 He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. 5 You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, 6 nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday. 7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. 8 You will only look with your eyes and see the recompense of the wicked. 9 Because you have made YHWH your dwelling

place-- the Most High, who is my refuge-- 10 no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent. 11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. 12 On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone. 13 You will tread on the lion and the adder; the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot. 14 "Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. 15 When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. 16 With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation."

[Jhn 5:13-14 ESV] 13 Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jehoshua had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place.

14 Afterward Jehoshua found him in the temple and said to him, "See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you."

[Jhn 8:3-11 ESV] 3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst 4 they said to him, "Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. 5 Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?" 6 This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jehoshua bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. 7 And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, "Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her."

8 And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. 9 But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jehoshua was left alone with the woman standing before him. 10 Jehoshua stood up and said to her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" 11 She said, "No one, master." And Jeshua said, "Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more."]]
