Who is in control of evil

Who is in control of evil? Who is satan and what is his role in evil? What does the bible say? The answer might shock you

[Jos 23:15-16 ESV] 15 But just as all the good things that YHWH your God promised concerning you have been fulfilled for you, so YHWH will bring upon you all the evil things, until he has destroyed you from off this good land that YHWH your God has given you, 16 if you transgress the covenant of

YHWH your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them. Then the anger of YHWH will be kindled against you, and you shall perish quickly from off the good land that he has given to you."

[Jdg 2:11-15 ESV] 11 And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of YHWH and served the Baals. 12 And they abandoned YHWH, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt. They went after other gods, from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed down to them. And they provoked YHWH to anger. 13 They abandoned YHWH and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth. 14 So the anger

of YHWH was kindled against Israel, and he gave them over to plunderers, who plundered them. And he sold them into the hand of their surrounding enemies, so that they could no longer withstand their enemies. 15 Whenever they marched out, the hand of YHWH was against them for harm, as YHWH had warned, and as YHWH had sworn to them. And they were in terrible distress.

[1Sa 2:6-10 ESV] 6 YHWH kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up. 7 YHWH makes poor and makes rich; he brings low and he exalts. 8 He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor. For the pillars of the earth are YHWH's, and on them he has set the world. 9 "He will guard

the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness, for not by might shall a man prevail. 10 The adversaries of YHWH shall be broken to pieces; against them he will thunder in heaven. YHWH will judge the ends of the earth; he will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed."

[1Sa 16:14-23 ESV] 14 Now the Spirit of YHWH departed from Saul, and a harmful spirit from YHWH tormented him. 15 And Saul's servants said to him, "Behold now, a harmful spirit from God is tormenting you. 16 Let our lord now command your servants who are before you to seek out a man who is skillful in playing the lyre, and when the harmful spirit from God is upon you, he will play it, and you will be well." 17 So Saul said to his servants, "Provide for me a man who can play well and bring him to me." 18 One of the young men answered, "Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a man of good

presence, and YHWH is with him." 19 Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, "Send me David your son, who is with the sheep." 20 And Jesse took a donkey laden with bread and a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them by David his son to Saul. 21 And David came to Saul and entered his service. And Saul loved him greatly, and he became his armor-bearer. 22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, "Let David remain in my service, for he has found favor in my sight." 23 And whenever the harmful spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the lyre and played it with his hand. So Saul was refreshed and was well, and the harmful spirit departed from him.

[1Sa 18:10-11 ESV] 10 The next day a harmful spirit from God rushed upon Saul, and he raved within his house while David was playing the lyre, as he did

day by day. Saul had his spear in his hand. 11 And Saul hurled the spear, for he thought, "I will pin David to the wall." But David evaded him twice.

[1Sa 19:9-12 ESV] 9 Then a harmful spirit from YHWH came upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand. And David was playing the lyre. 10 And Saul sought to pin David to the wall with the spear, but he eluded Saul, so that he struck the spear into the wall. And David fled and escaped that

night. 11 Saul sent messengers to David's house to watch him, that he might kill him in the morning. But Michal, David's wife, told him, "If you do not escape with your life tonight, tomorrow you will be killed." 12 So Michal let David down through the window, and he fled away and escaped.

[2Sa 12:9-15 ESV] 9 Why have you despised the word of YHWH, to do what is evil in his sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and have taken his wife to be your wife and have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. 10 Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.' 11 Thus says YHWH, 'Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house. And I will take your wives before your eyes and give

them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun. 12 For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel and before the sun.'" 13 David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against YHWH." And Nathan said to David, "YHWH also has put away your sin; you shall not die. 14 Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned YHWH, the child who is born to you shall die." 15 Then Nathan went to his house. And YHWH afflicted the child that Uriah's wife bore to David, and he became sick.

[2Sa 24:1 ESV] 1 Again the anger of YHWH was kindled against Israel, and he incited David against them, saying, "Go, number Israel and Judah."

[1Ch 21:1 ESV] 1 Then Satan stood against Israel and incited David to number Israel.

[1Ki 9:6-9 ESV] 6 But if you turn aside from following me, you or your children, and do not keep my commandments and my statutes that I have set before you, but go and serve other gods and worship them, 7 then I will cut off Israel from the land that I have given them, and the house that I have consecrated for my name I will cast out of my sight, and Israel will become a proverb and a byword among all peoples. 8 And this house will become a heap of ruins.

Everyone passing by it will be astonished and will hiss, and they will say, 'Why has YHWH done thus to this land and to this house?' 9 Then they will say, 'Because they abandoned YHWH their God who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt and laid hold on other gods and worshiped them and served them. Therefore YHWH has brought all this disaster on them.'"

[1Ki 11:11-14, 17, 21-25 ESV] 11 Therefore YHWH said to Solomon, "Since this has been your practice and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes that I have commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom from you and will give it to your servant. 12 Yet for the sake of David your father I will not do it in your days, but I will tear it out of the hand of your son. 13 However, I will not tear away all the kingdom, but I will give one tribe to your son, for the sake of David my servant and for the sake of Jerusalem that I have chosen." 14 And YHWH raised up an adversary against Solomon, Hadad the Edomite. He was of the royal house in Edom. ... 17 But Hadad fled to Egypt, together with certain Edomites of his father's servants, Hadad still being a little child. ... 21 But when Hadad heard in Egypt that David slept with his fathers and that

Joab the commander of the army was dead, Hadad said to Pharaoh, "Let me depart, that I may go to my own country." 22 But Pharaoh said to him, "What have you lacked with me that you are now seeking to go to your own country?" And he said to him, "Only let me depart." 23 God also raised up as an adversary to him, Rezon the son of Eliada, who had fled from his master Hadadezer king of Zobah. 24 And he gathered men about him and became leader of a marauding band, after the killing by David. And they went to Damascus and lived there and made him king in Damascus. 25 He was an adversary of Israel all the days of Solomon, doing harm as Hadad did. And he loathed Israel and reigned over Syria.

[1Ki 22:13-23 ESV] 13 And the messenger who went to summon Micaiah said to him, "Behold, the words of the prophets with one accord are favorable to the king. Let your word be like the word of one of them, and speak favorably." 14 But Micaiah said, "As YHWH lives, what YHWH says to me, that I will speak." 15 And when he had come to the king, the king said to him, "Micaiah, shall we go to Ramoth-gilead to battle, or shall we refrain?" And he answered him, "Go up and triumph; YHWH will give it into the hand of the king." 16 But the king said to him, "How many times shall I make you swear that you speak to me nothing but the truth in the name of YHWH?" 17 And he said, "I saw all Israel scattered on the mountains, as sheep that have no shepherd. And YHWH said, 'These have no master; let each return to his home in peace.'" 18 And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, "Did I not tell you that he would

not prophesy good concerning me, but evil?" 19 And Micaiah said, "Therefore hear the word of YHWH: I saw YHWH sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing beside him on his right hand and on his left; 20 and YHWH said, 'Who will entice Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead?' And one said one thing, and another said another. 21 Then a spirit came forward and stood before YHWH, saying, 'I will entice him.' 22 And YHWH said to him, 'By what means?' And he said, 'I will go out, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.' And he said, 'You are to entice him, and you shall succeed; go out and do so.' 23 Now therefore behold, YHWH has put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these your prophets; YHWH has declared evil for you."

[2Ki 21:10-15 ESV] 10 And YHWH said by his servants the prophets, 11 "Because Manasseh king of Judah has committed these abominations and has done things more evil than all that the Amorites did, who were before him, and has made Judah also to sin with his idols, 12 therefore thus says YHWH, the God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing upon Jerusalem and Judah such evil that the ears of everyone who hears of it will tingle. 13 And I will stretch over Jerusalem the measuring line of Samaria, and the plumb line of the house of

Ahab, and I will wipe Jerusalem as one wipes a dish, wiping it and turning it upside down. 14 And I will forsake the remnant of my heritage and give them into the hand of their enemies, and they shall become a prey and a spoil to all their enemies, 15 because they have done what is evil in my sight and have provoked me to anger, since the day their fathers came out of Egypt, even to this day."

[2Ki 22:14-20 ESV] 14 So Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam, and Achbor, and Shaphan, and Asaiah went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe (now she lived in Jerusalem in the Second Quarter), and they talked with her. 15 And she said to them, "Thus says YHWH, the God of Israel: 'Tell the man who sent you to me, 16 Thus says YHWH, Behold, I will bring disaster upon this place and upon its inhabitants, all the words of the book that the king of Judah has read. 17 Because they have forsaken me and have made offerings to other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the work of their hands, therefore my wrath will be kindled against this place, and it will not be quenched. 18 But to

the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of YHWH, thus shall you say to him, Thus says YHWH, the God of Israel: Regarding the words that you have heard, 19 because your heart was penitent, and you humbled yourself before YHWH, when you heard how I spoke against this place and against its inhabitants, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and you have torn your clothes and wept before me, I also have heard you, declares YHWH. 20 Therefore, behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace, and your eyes shall not see all the evil that I will bring upon this place.'" And they brought back word to the king.

[Isa 13:3-22 ESV] 3 I myself have commanded my consecrated ones, and have summoned my mighty men to execute my anger, my proudly exulting ones. 4 The sound of a tumult is on the mountains as of a great multitude! The sound of an uproar of kingdoms, of nations gathering together! YHWH of hosts is mustering a host for battle. 5 They come from a distant land, from the end of the heavens, YHWH and the weapons of his indignation, to destroy the whole land. 6 Wail, for the day of YHWH is near; as destruction from the Almighty it will come! 7 Therefore all hands will be feeble, and every human heart will melt. 8 They will be dismayed: pangs and agony will seize them; they will be in anguish like a woman in labor. They will look aghast at one another; their faces will be aflame. 9 Behold, the day of YHWH comes, cruel, with wrath and fierce anger, to make the land a desolation and to destroy its sinners from it. 10 For the stars of the heavens and their constellations will not give their light; the sun will be dark at its rising, and the moon will not shed its light. 11 I will punish the world for its evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; I will put an end to the pomp of the arrogant, and lay low the pompous pride of the ruthless. 12 I will make people more rare than fine gold, and mankind than the

gold of Ophir. 13 Therefore I will make the heavens tremble, and the earth will be shaken out of its place, at the wrath of YHWH of hosts in the day of his fierce anger. 14 And like a hunted gazelle, or like sheep with none to gather them, each will turn to his own people, and each will flee to his own land. 15 Whoever is found will be thrust through, and whoever is caught will fall by the sword. 16 Their infants will be dashed in pieces before their eyes; their houses will be plundered and their wives ravished. 17 Behold, I am stirring up the Medes against them, who have no regard for silver and do not delight in gold. 18 Their bows will slaughter the young men; they will have no mercy on the fruit of the womb; their eyes will not pity children. 19 And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the splendor and pomp of the Chaldeans, will be like Sodom and Gomorrah when God overthrew them. 20 It will never be inhabited or lived in for all generations; no Arab will pitch his tent there; no shepherds will make their flocks lie down there. 21 But wild animals will lie down there, and their houses will be full of howling creatures; there ostriches will dwell, and there wild goats will dance. 22 Hyenas will cry in its towers, and jackals in the pleasant palaces; its time is close at hand and its days will not be prolonged.

[Jer 4:4-8, 18 ESV] 4 Circumcise yourselves to YHWH; remove the foreskin of your hearts, O men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem; lest my wrath go forth like fire, and burn with none to quench it, because of the evil of your deeds." 5 Declare in Judah, and proclaim in Jerusalem, and say, "Blow the trumpet through the land; cry aloud and say, 'Assemble, and let us go into the fortified cities!' 6 Raise a standard toward Zion, flee for safety, stay not, for I

bring evil from the north, and great destruction. 7 A lion has gone up from his thicket, a destroyer of nations has set out; he has gone out from his place to make your land a waste; your cities will be ruins without inhabitant. 8 For this put on sackcloth, lament and wail, for the fierce anger of YHWH has not turned back from us." ... 18 Your ways and your deeds have brought this upon you. This is your doom, and it is bitter; it has reached your very heart."

[Jer 5:11-15 ESV] 11 For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have been utterly treacherous to me, declares YHWH. 12 They have spoken falsely of YHWH and have said, 'He will do nothing; no evil will come upon us, nor shall we see sword or famine. 13 The prophets will become wind; the word is not in them. Thus shall it be done to them!'" 14 Therefore thus says YHWH,

the God of hosts: "Because you have spoken this word, behold, I am making my words in your mouth a fire, and this people wood, and the fire shall consume them. 15 Behold, I am bringing against you a nation from afar, O house of Israel, declares YHWH. It is an enduring nation; it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language you do not know, nor can you understand what they say.

[Jer 6:10-19 ESV] 10 To whom shall I speak and give warning, that they may hear? Behold, their ears are uncircumcised, they cannot listen; behold, the word of YHWH is to them an object of scorn; they take no pleasure in it. 11 Therefore I am full of the wrath of YHWH; I am weary of holding it in. "Pour it out upon the children in the street, and upon the gatherings of young men, also; both husband and wife shall be taken, the elderly and the very aged. 12 Their houses shall be turned over to others, their fields and wives together, for I will stretch out my hand against the inhabitants of the land," declares YHWH. 13 "For from the least to the greatest of them, everyone is greedy for unjust gain; and from prophet to priest, everyone deals falsely. 14 They have healed the wound of my people lightly, saying, 'Peace, peace,' when there is no

peace. 15 Were they ashamed when they committed abomination? No, they were not at all ashamed; they did not know how to blush. Therefore they shall fall among those who fall; at the time that I punish them, they shall be overthrown," says YHWH. 16 Thus says YHWH: "Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls. But they said, 'We will not walk in it.' 17 I set watchmen over you, saying, 'Pay attention to the sound of the trumpet!' But they said, 'We will not pay attention.' 18 Therefore hear, O nations, and know, O congregation, what will happen to them. 19 Hear, O earth; behold, I am bringing evil upon this people, the fruit of their devices, because they have not paid attention to my words; and as for my law, they have rejected it.

[Jer 7:16-20 ESV] 16 "As for you, do not pray for this people, or lift up a cry or prayer for them, and do not intercede with me, for I will not hear you. 17 Do you not see what they are doing in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 18 The children gather wood, the fathers kindle fire, and the women knead dough, to make cakes for the queen of heaven. And they pour

out drink offerings to other gods, to provoke me to anger. 19 Is it I whom they provoke? declares YHWH. Is it not themselves, to their own shame? 20 Therefore thus says the lord YHWH: Behold, my anger and my wrath will be poured out on this place, upon man and beast, upon the trees of the field and the fruit of the ground; it will burn and not be quenched."

[Jer 8:9-17 ESV] 9 The wise men shall be put to shame; they shall be dismayed and taken; behold, they have rejected the word of YHWH, so what wisdom is in them? 10 Therefore I will give their wives to others and their fields to conquerors, because from the least to the greatest everyone is greedy for unjust gain; from prophet to priest, everyone deals falsely. 11 They have healed the wound of my people lightly, saying, 'Peace, peace,' when there is no peace. 12 Were they ashamed when they committed abomination? No, they were not at all ashamed; they did not know how to blush. Therefore they shall fall among the fallen; when I punish them, they shall be overthrown, says YHWH. 13 When I would gather them, declares YHWH, there are no grapes

on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree; even the leaves are withered, and what I gave them has passed away from them." 14 Why do we sit still? Gather together; let us go into the fortified cities and perish there, for YHWH our God has doomed us to perish and has given us poisoned water to drink, because we have sinned against YHWH. 15 We looked for peace, but no good came; for a time of healing, but behold, terror. 16 "The snorting of their horses is heard from Dan; at the sound of the neighing of their stallions the whole land quakes. They come and devour the land and all that fills it, the city and those who dwell in it. 17 For behold, I am sending among you serpents, adders that cannot be charmed, and they shall bite you," declares YHWH.

the God of Israel: Behold, I will feed this people with bitter food, and give them poisonous water to drink. 16 I will scatter them among the nations whom neither they nor their fathers have known, and I will send the sword after them, until I have consumed them."

[Jer 11:9-23 ESV] 9 Again YHWH said to me, "A conspiracy exists among the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 10 They have turned back to the iniquities of their forefathers, who refused to hear my words. They have gone after other gods to serve them. The house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken my covenant that I made with their fathers. 11 Therefore, thus says YHWH, Behold, I am bringing evil upon them that they cannot escape. Though they cry to me, I will not listen to them. 12 Then the cities of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem will go and cry to the gods to whom they make offerings, but they cannot save them in the time of their trouble. 13 For your gods have become as many as your cities, O Judah, and as many as the streets of Jerusalem are the altars you have set up to shame, altars to make offerings to Baal. 14 "Therefore do not pray for this people, or lift up a cry or prayer on their behalf, for I will not listen when they call to me in the time of their trouble. 15 What right has my beloved in my house, when she has done many vile deeds? Can even sacrificial flesh avert your doom? Can you then exult? 16 YHWH once called you 'a green olive tree, beautiful with good

fruit.' But with the roar of a great tempest he will set fire to it, and its branches will be consumed. 17 YHWH of hosts, who planted you, has decreed evil against you, because of the evil that the house of Israel and the house of Judah have done, provoking me to anger by making offerings to Baal." 18 YHWH made it known to me and I knew; then you showed me their deeds. 19 But I was like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter. I did not know it was against me they devised schemes, saying, "Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name be remembered no more." 20 But, O YHWH of hosts, who judges righteously, who tests the heart and the mind, let me see your vengeance upon them, for to you have I committed my cause. 21 Therefore thus says YHWH concerning the men of Anathoth, who seek your life, and say, "Do not prophesy in the name of YHWH, or you will die by our hand"-- 22 therefore thus says YHWH of hosts: "Behold, I will punish them. The young men shall die by the sword, their sons and their daughters shall die by famine, 23 and none of them shall be left. For I will bring evil upon the men of Anathoth, the year of their punishment."

[Jer 13:12-16 ESV] 12 "You shall speak to them this word: 'Thus says YHWH, the God of Israel, "Every jar shall be filled with wine."' And they will say to you, 'Do we not indeed know that every jar will be filled with wine?' 13 Then you shall say to them, 'Thus says YHWH: Behold, I will fill with drunkenness all the inhabitants of this land: the kings who sit on David's throne, the priests, the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 14 And I will dash them one

against another, fathers and sons together, declares YHWH. I will not pity or spare or have compassion, that I should not destroy them.'" 15 Hear and give ear; be not proud, for YHWH has spoken. 16 Give glory to YHWH your God before he brings darkness, before your feet stumble on the twilight mountains, and while you look for light he turns it into gloom and makes it deep darkness.

[Jer 14:14-16 ESV] 14 And YHWH said to me: "The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I did not send them, nor did I command them or speak to them. They are prophesying to you a lying vision, worthless divination, and the deceit of their own minds. 15 Therefore thus says YHWH concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name although I did not

send them, and who say, 'Sword and famine shall not come upon this land': By sword and famine those prophets shall be consumed. 16 And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem, victims of famine and sword, with none to bury them--them, their wives, their sons, and their daughters. For I will pour out their evil upon them.

[Jer 15:1-9 ESV] 1 Then YHWH said to me, "Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my heart would not turn toward this people. Send them out of my sight, and let them go! 2 And when they ask you, 'Where shall we go?' you shall say to them, 'Thus says YHWH: "'Those who are for pestilence, to pestilence, and those who are for the sword, to the sword; those who are for famine, to famine, and those who are for captivity, to captivity.' 3 I will appoint over them four kinds of destroyers, declares YHWH: the sword to kill, the dogs to tear, and the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth to devour and destroy. 4 And I will make them a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth because of what Manasseh the son of Hezekiah, king of Judah, did in Jerusalem. 5 "Who will have pity on you, O Jerusalem, or who will grieve for

you? Who will turn aside to ask about your welfare? 6 You have rejected me, declares YHWH; you keep going backward, so I have stretched out my hand against you and destroyed you-- I am weary of relenting. 7 I have winnowed them with a winnowing fork in the gates of the land; I have bereaved them; I have destroyed my people; they did not turn from their ways. 8 I have made their widows more in number than the sand of the seas; I have brought against the mothers of young men a destroyer at noonday; I have made anguish and terror fall upon them suddenly. 9 She who bore seven has grown feeble; she has fainted away; her sun went down while it was yet day; she has been shamed and disgraced. And the rest of them I will give to the sword before their enemies, declares YHWH."

worshiped them, and have forsaken me and have not kept my law, 12 and because you have done worse than your fathers, for behold, every one of you follows his stubborn, evil will, refusing to listen to me. 13 Therefore I will hurl you out of this land into a land that neither you nor your fathers have known, and there you shall serve other gods day and night, for I will show you no favor.'

[Jer 17:14-18 ESV] 14 Heal me, O YHWH, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved, for you are my praise. 15 Behold, they say to me, "Where is the word of YHWH? Let it come!" 16 I have not run away from being your shepherd, nor have I desired the day of sickness. You know what came out of

my lips; it was before your face. 17 Be not a terror to me; you are my refuge in the day of evil. 18 Let those be put to shame who persecute me, but let me not be put to shame; let them be dismayed, but let me not be dismayed; bring upon them the day of disaster; destroy them with double destruction!

[Jer 19:1-15 ESV] 1 Thus says YHWH, "Go, buy a potter's earthenware flask, and take some of the elders of the people and some of the elders of the priests, 2 and go out to the Valley of the Son of Hinnom at the entry of the Potsherd Gate, and proclaim there the words that I tell you. 3 You shall say, 'Hear the word of YHWH, O kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem. Thus says YHWH of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing such evil upon this place that the ears of everyone who hears of it will tingle. 4 Because the people have forsaken me and have profaned this place by making offerings in it to other gods whom neither they nor their fathers nor the kings of Judah have known; and because they have filled this place with the blood of innocents, 5 and have built the high places of Baal to burn their sons in the fire as burnt offerings to Baal, which I did not command or decree, nor did it come into my mind-- 6 therefore, behold, days are coming, declares YHWH, when this place shall no more be called Topheth, or the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter. 7 And in this place I will make void the plans of Judah and Jerusalem, and will cause their people to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hand of those who seek their life. I will give their dead bodies for food to the birds of the air and to the beasts of the earth. 8 And I will

make this city a horror, a thing to be hissed at. Everyone who passes by it will be horrified and will hiss because of all its wounds. 9 And I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and their daughters, and everyone shall eat the flesh of his neighbor in the siege and in the distress, with which their enemies and those who seek their life afflict them.' 10 "Then you shall break the flask in the sight of the men who go with you, 11 and shall say to them, 'Thus says YHWH of hosts: So will I break this people and this city, as one breaks a potter's vessel, so that it can never be mended. Men shall bury in Topheth because there will be no place else to bury. 12 Thus will I do to this place, declares YHWH, and to its inhabitants, making this city like Topheth. 13 The houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah--all the houses on whose roofs offerings have been offered to all the host of heaven, and drink offerings have been poured out to other gods--shall be defiled like the place of Topheth.'" 14 Then Jeremiah came from Topheth, where YHWH had sent him to prophesy, and he stood in the court of YHWH's house and said to all the people: 15 "Thus says YHWH of hosts, the God of Israel, behold, I am bringing upon this city and upon all its towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it, because they have stiffened their neck, refusing to hear my words."

[Jer 21:8-10 ESV] 8 "And to this people you shall say: 'Thus says YHWH: Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death. 9 He who stays in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence, but he who goes out and surrenders to the Chaldeans who are besieging you shall live and shall

have his life as a prize of war. 10 For I have set my face against this city for harm and not for good, declares YHWH: it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.'

[Jer 23:9-19 ESV] 9 Concerning the prophets: My heart is broken within me; all my bones shake; I am like a drunken man, like a man overcome by wine, because of YHWH and because of his holy words. 10 For the land is full of adulterers; because of the curse the land mourns, and the pastures of the wilderness are dried up. Their course is evil, and their might is not right. 11 "Both prophet and priest are ungodly; even in my house I have found their evil, declares YHWH. 12 Therefore their way shall be to them like slippery paths in the darkness, into which they shall be driven and fall, for I will bring evil upon them in the year of their punishment, declares YHWH. 13 In the prophets of Samaria I saw an unsavory thing: they prophesied by Baal and led my people Israel astray. 14 But in the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen a horrible thing: they commit adultery and walk in lies; they strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one turns from his evil; all of them have become

like Sodom to me, and its inhabitants like Gomorrah." 15 Therefore thus says YHWH of hosts concerning the prophets: "Behold, I will feed them with bitter food and give them poisoned water to drink, for from the prophets of Jerusalem ungodliness has gone out into all the land." 16 Thus says YHWH of hosts: "Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, filling you with vain hopes. They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of YHWH. 17 They say continually to those who despise the word of YHWH, 'It shall be well with you'; and to everyone who stubbornly follows his own heart, they say, 'No evil shall come upon you.'" 18 For who among them has stood in the council of YHWH to see and to hear his word, or who has paid attention to his word and listened? 19 Behold, the storm of YHWH! Wrath has gone forth, a whirling tempest; it will burst upon the head of the wicked.

[Jer 25:4-7, 29 ESV] 4 You have neither listened nor inclined your ears to hear, although YHWH persistently sent to you all his servants the prophets, 5 saying, 'Turn now, every one of you, from his evil way and evil deeds, and dwell upon the land that YHWH has given to you and your fathers from of old and forever. 6 Do not go after other gods to serve and worship them, or provoke me to anger with the work of your hands. Then I will do you no harm.' 7 Yet you

have not listened to me, declares YHWH, that you might provoke me to anger with the work of your hands to your own harm. ... 29 For behold, I begin to work evil at the city that is called by my name, and shall you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, for I am summoning a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth, declares YHWH of hosts.'

[Jer 26:3-6 ESV] 3 It may be they will listen, and every one turn from his evil way, that I may relent of the evil that I intend to do to them because of their evil deeds. 4 You shall say to them, 'Thus says YHWH: If you will not listen to me, to walk in my law that I have set before you, 5 and to listen to the

words of my servants the prophets whom I send to you urgently, though you have not listened, 6 then I will make this house like Shiloh, and I will make this city a curse for all the nations of the earth.'"

[Jer 32:22-23, 42 ESV] 22 And you gave them this land, which you swore to their fathers to give them, a land flowing with milk and honey. 23 And they entered and took possession of it. But they did not obey your voice or walk in your law. They did nothing of all you commanded them to do. Therefore you

have made all this evil come upon them. ... 42 "For thus says YHWH: Just as I have brought all this great evil upon this people, so I will bring upon them all the good that I promise them.

[Jer 35:16-17 ESV] 16 The sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have kept the command that their father gave them, but this people has not obeyed me. 17 Therefore, thus says YHWH, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I

am bringing upon Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I have pronounced against them, because I have spoken to them and they have not listened, I have called to them and they have not answered."

[Jer 36:2-3, 31 ESV] 2 "Take a scroll and write on it all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel and Judah and all the nations, from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah until today. 3 It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil that I intend to do to them, so that every one may turn from his evil way, and that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin." ... 31 And I

will punish him and his offspring and his servants for their iniquity. I will bring upon them and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem and upon the people of Judah all the evil that I have pronounced against them, but they would not hear.'"
